Western Historical Training and Chinese Historians' Research Awareness
—— A Study Based on Wu Yujin's Doctoral Dissertation
Yang Zhao
(Beijing Foreign Studies University)
Abstract Wu Yujin was one of the foundational scholars of world history studies in China. Influenced by the debate on Chinese social history, a major historiographical debate in Republican China, he delved into feudalism in ancient China in both his master's and doctoral dissertations. In particular, the rigorous training in Western history at Harvard University enabled his doctoral dissertation to adopt a Sino-Western comparative perspective; centering on royal power and law in Chinese feudal society, he explored similarities beneath differences between Chinese and European feudal systems, thus forming his distinctive academic style. His overseas study experience exerted a profound influence on his subsequent research in world history, which thereafter featured a clear Sino-Western comparative vision and a strong concern for contemporary reality.
