On Canonical Selection and Translational Hermeneutics In Richard Wilhelm's Die chinesische Literatur

Li Song, Tian Jialu (Wuhan University)

Abstract  Die chinesische Literatur, compiled by the German Protestant missionary Richard Wilhelm in 1926, stands as the third literary history of China in German Sinology. In Die chinesische Literatur, Wilhelm draws extensively on Confucian classics including LunYu (The Analects), ShangShu (The Book of Documents) and ShiJing (The Book of Songs), offering creative retranslations and interpretations from a Western cultural perspective. He elaborates the metaphysical pursuit in LunYu, unfolds the mystical implications of ShangShu, explicates the worship of Mandate of Heaven in ShiJing, and thereby illuminates the ultimate values embodied in the foundational Confucian classics. As a cultural mediator between China and Germany, Wilhelm owes his translation and interpretation strategy much to his cultural outlook of "östlichen und westlichen Denkens vereinigt werden können". From the cultural perspective of translation studies, Wilhelm was not merely a linguistic translator but an intermediary and mediator of cultural exchange between China and Germany, and even between China and the West. His classical interpretations in Die chinesische Literatur inherit the tradition of missionary translations of Chinese canonical texts from the 16th to 18th centuries, and incorporate the new developments in missionary Sinology of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, making significant contributions to German Sinology and the dissemination of Chinese culture in the Germanspeaking world. An analysis of Wilhelm's translation practices and cultural interpretations in Sino-German cultural exchanges thus helps to clarify the pathways and intellectual significance of civilizational mutual learning in cross-cultural contexts.

Key words  Richard Wilhelm; Die chinesische Literatur; translational hermeneutics; classical hermeneutics; civilization exchanges and mutual learning
